Male pattern baldness is genetic and the gene is passed to a child from either parent. It’s not only from the mother as had been previously thought. Pattern baldness in men is the most common type of hair loss. It usually appears as a receding hairline and baldness on the crown of the head. The basic cause of balding in men is dihydrotestosterone, also called DHT. DHT is a byproduct of the male hormone testosterone.
Hair Loss Causes
Male-pattern baldness is caused when the hair follicle starts to shrink due to a buildup of testosterone and some natural oils. Most people don’t understand that the causes of hair loss are related to numerous conditions that often have little or nothing to do with hair growth or hair loss. Male hair loss, male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia, is an hereditary condition which can cause male balding or significant male hair loss in 67 percent of all men. But, it is important to note that hereditary factor that causes hair loss in men is not only rooted from having a mother or a father who happens to be bald. Fortunately, doctors and scientists have come to understand the causes of hair loss and are discovering new ways of treating it. Hair Loss Treatment
Treatment is not necessary if you are comfortable with your appearance. Thankfully for most men, modern medicine provides new treatments for hair loss. Remember that most of the hair loss treatments available on the market these days are most successfully applied by those who haven’t waited too long to do the right thing for their condition. There are four basic approaches to treating hair loss:
- Antiandrogens– these stop DHT from binding with androgen receptors
- Anti-Inflammatories– prevent inflammation, redness, and scalp itching that can worsen hair loss
- DHT Inhibitors– restore a proper balance of shedding and regrowth by reducing the production of DHT
- Growth Stimulants– designed to stimulate the growth of new hair
The exact reason and cause of male pattern baldness is not known, though it is clear that our genetic makeup is a huge part of it. The first and most obvious way of seeing if you are at risk for male pattern baldness is to look at pictures of your father and your grandfather. One of the identified genes involved in male pattern baldness is located on the X chromosome, which is inherited only from the maternal side, but this one gene does not explain all the cases of male pattern baldness.
